Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such medications need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
